The art of mehndi

  • 16 January 2024

Mehndi is a form of temporary body art that involves applying a paste made from henna leaves to the skin, creating artistic and ornamental patterns.

Mehndi is often used for special celebrations in India, such as weddings, religious festivals and other festive occasions. Designs vary according to region, culture and individual preference. Henna designs can be elaborate, covering the hands and sometimes even the arms, and are considered a form of artistic expression and body decoration.

It is popular to do mehndi at Indian weddings, where the bride and family members can display intricate and symbolic designs on their hands. Henna is also appreciated for its temporary dyeing properties, allowing the designs to last for a few weeks before gradually fading.

Some of the young girls at the Shanti Foundation are gifted in this art, a gift they often share with us. The young children in the Gokula programme also apply mehndi to welcome us. Natural henna involves no health risk.
